Newbie question.

I'm a long time Mac user who picked up a IIgs at a thrift store for $3. I'm working
on getting the Apple memory card so I can boot GS/OS. I became interested when I found
that this OS is Mac-like and decided to add the machine to my collection. Read a bunch
of FACS and learned: I have ROM 01; I need more memory to boot GS/OS; the
machine does
boot dos 3.3.

I'm using a NTSC monitor off the RCA jack. When I try my Apple "Macintosh 12"
RGB display"
I get "smeared" characters - I can see that there is text displayed but can't
read it. To
me it appears that the interface matches (no smoke....) but that the horizontal
scan rate
doesn't. Can this monitor be used on a IIgs at all? Is that what the those
"video overlay"
files I saw somewhere on the net are for? Am I dreaming?

Any helpful hints would be appreciated.
