It was the standard serial card people used to use to attach their
modem to their computers. The Apple//c and IIGS are more like the
"digital appliance" idea thought of by Steve Jobs. These two computers
have serial ports built in. I gather from your first question you have a
Laser 128. I don't know if they have built in serial ports. If not you
would probably have to put the card in the external slot.
The second part of your question is easier. If you have a different
serial card you can use it instead. The only catch is will your programs
support it. If they do then go for it.
