Not my experience. I can put long file names on a disk and still the
files on my Superdrive with the MS-DOS FST (all be it the short name
version).

This has never happened to me. I wonder what is going on here?
When I want ot use a disk on my GS I always;
a) full format the disk with a volume label (usually "MSDOS").
b) copy whatever files I want to the disk.
Maybe it has to do with the sequence I'm creating the disk?
