The Ensoniq 5503 supports up to 8-channel output, but all outputs are
multiplexed onto a single pin. The audio connector on the IIGS motherboard
includes this multiplexed output, plus signals that can be fed to a
demultiplexer to split the sound back out to multiple channels. In typical
applications, the low-order bit is used to pick between left and right
channels...this, and some buffering and amplification, is all that a sound
card for the IIGS does.
Here's an idea: with the way surround sound has taken off, it'd be kinda
neat to build a sound card that would provide the 4-6 channels needed to do
that. The next trick would then be to come up with some software to take
advantage of it...
