Actually, Perry, they did...

According to the Apple Product Facts booklet, published by Price Books
and Forms, Inc., the Apple II was discontinued in December 1982. From
June 1979 to December 1982, Apple made and sold both the II and II+
simultaneously.

This booklet is a very reliable source of information about
discontinued Apple equipment... It is utilized heavily by the computer
industry, and is my Koran for my Apple Museum For-a-Day. My copy is
dated December 16, 1995, which is when I abandoned retail sales.

While I have the book open, here are the other Apple II/III models and
peripherals, along with their arrival and discontinuation dates:

Apple II                August 1978 to December 1982
Apple II+               June 1979 to June 1983
Apple IIc               April 1984 to September 1988
Apple IIc Plus          September 1988 to November 1990
Apple IIe               January 1983 to March 1985
Apple IIe Enhanced      March 1985 to November 1993*
Apple IIGS              September 1986 to December 1992
Apple III               May 1980 to September 1985
Apple III+              December 1983 to September 1985

Apple Color RGB         September 1986 to December 1992

Apple Personal Modem    September 1985 to December 1990

Apple Imagewriter I     June 1984 to December 1985
Apple Imagewriter II    September 1985 to Present
Apple Imagewriter 15"   April 1984 to September 1987
Apple Imagewriter LQ    August 1987 to  December 1990
Apple Silentype         January 1980 to June 1984
Apple Scribe            April 1984 to August 1986

* This includes the "Platinum" model, which really isn't different from
the "beige" model, other than it has less components. But functionally,
it is the same. This line is also the longest selling single model of a
computer in Apple History.

FACTOID: In March 1985, the Apple Laserwriter was released. It had a
Motorola 68000 microprocessor running at 12mhz and 1.5MB RAM soldered.
Two years running, the Laserwriter and Laserwriter Plus were the most
powerful Apple devices made. A Macintosh finally beat the performance
of the Laserwriter/Laserwriter Plus in March 1987 with the Macintosh
II, running a 68020 at 16mhz.
