Apple did the same thing with the Apple II. I believe the old UniDisk 3.5
had a 2MHz 6502 in it when the Apple II still only ran at 1MHz (someone
please correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading this somewhere a few
years ago, I can't remember how much memory it had).

Even better (or worse) the IIgs ADB microcontroller is an M50740, a
microcontroller version of the 6502. The 740 in the IIgs only has 96 bytes
of RAM and 3KB of ROM but it runs at 3.58 MHz, faster than the main
processor!
