In Europe there were between three or four times more clones than
original Apple machine.
Original Apples were found at schools and universities, where people did
not have to pay for them. Nearly all machines for personal use were
chop-suey clones. You could buy them in every electronics store, as a
complete unit, assembled mainboard only, or as a kit.
In 1984 you had to pay DM 4000,- (that time $2800) for an unenhanced IIe
with Disk II and Monitor II. A ][plus clone with Z80 and 64k on board,
plus two 40 track slim-line drives and a monitor did cost around DM
1800,-.
