I think that ADT will only run under DOS 3.3, which is a problem if you
do not already have a DOS 3.3 boot diskette.  You may be able to format a
DOS 3.3 diskette if you have some utility software.  I think that the Apple
II System Utility diskette will do this, though I am not sure if it will
create bootable diskettes.

On the otherhand, if you just want to create images of ProDOS diskettes
ADT will do that just fine from DOS 3.3, and the same goes if you are trying
to get images onto your Apple II.

But ADT does expect you to feed it properly formatted diskettes, or it will
throw error messages at you.  But it tends not to crash as you were
describing.
