When you boot the computer, does the drive even sound like it's getting
itself initialized (this is exhibited by a quite noticeable sound that's
like
card's being shuffled in an automatic shuffler).  If you don't even get
this,
then you've probably got hardware problem.

If you do get this sound, you may need to open the drive to clean the
head manually (this is not difficult to do using a Q-Tip and some alcohol),
or you may need to make a few adjustments on the IC card (there are
2 dials located there that make fine bias adjustments to the drive head)
