IIgs to PC via network -- AppleShare question

I'm trying to hook up my IIgs to a PC via AppleTalk. I've done the following:
- Bought a Shiva FastPath 4 AppleTalk<->Ethernet converter. Hail eBay!
- Bought some spare localtalk connectors to connect the printer port
on my IIgs to the FastPath. Hail eBay!
- Configured my ROM 01 IIgs for AppleShare out the printer port (slot 7
to "appletalk", slot 1 to "your card"). I used the 6.0.1 installer
to get the appletalk/appleshare goodies installed.
- Installed Macintosh Server Stuff under WinNT4 Server (SP5).
- Installed the latest netatalk under Red Hat Linux 6.0. Different PC,
so both systems can be up at the same time.
The IIgs boots cleanly. In the finder I can bring up the AppleShare
control panel. Trouble is, there's nobody home.
The blinking lights on the front of the FastPath suggest that all of
the wiring is sound. When I open up the AppleShare control panel on
the IIgs I get a few blips on the FastPath LED, and the inane broadcasts
from WinNT4 flash the other FastPath LED. The Farallon AUI<->10baseT
connector LEDs also blink at appropriate moments.
What I think I'm missing out on is some sort of AppleShare "zone"
configuration. When I did a test run of the WinNT Macintosh stuff at work,
it specified a default zone (the same zone that all the Macs in the
building are connected to). Didn't get that at home; I just got nothing.
The Linux stuff seems to be trying to contact some other entity; I get:
nbp_rgstr: Connection timed out
Can't register quake:Workstation@*
nbp_rgstr: Connection timed out
Can't register quake:netatalk@*
My question is, register with what? I get the feeling that, if I can
figure out what Linux and WinNT think they need, I'll also figure out
what it is my IIgs needs.
I'm hoping the answer isn't, "you need a Macintosh".
