Just to give the final result of this, the culprit was a RAM slowly
going the way of all earth, which seemingly had gotten the idea of
pulling up or down some of its input lines once in a while. I tried
exchanging pretty much everything else in the Apple, it didn't help. In
the end I didn't find the guilty party until Comrade no. 4116 (the RAM
in this Apple is of East German production) went completely dead. Then
it was easy.
