GNO problem

So, I set up GNO 2.0.6 on my Apple IIGS, and after installation, I
launched the kernel and tried to login as root.  After typing root, it
thought for a bit, and then presented me with a login prompt again.
Examining the syslog yielded the following information:

Tue Jun 29 15:03:07 1999 (auth.err) getty: /usr/sbin/login: I/O error

My gno root directory and the hfs directory are on an AppleShare volume
(I don't have an HD ... yet)   What could be causing this I/O error?
Low memory?
