It's at least possible that the CF-SD converter is doing some kind of
block translation. Are you inserting the whole CF-SD shebang into the
PC or just the SD card?

I've done it both ways with the same result.

I only ask because it seems odd that if there's a timing problem, that
it'd get far enough to read the entire boot block and miss fire on
block 1 ...

I can see your point, but it's posible that the boot block is read
in a more tolerant way.  Or maybe the adapter looks busy too long
after reading block 0, and the next read fails...
