This sounds more like a protocol problem. First, is this a hand made cable? It
may make a difference. The //c used very little handshaking but the ssc had
better support for this. Also, check the switch settings on the ssc and make
sure they are correct. I hope you have a manual. They are also posted on the
net. Sometimes these switches will interfere with software settings. As stated
in another post. You should be able to use a term program on the PC and BASIC
on the apple. On the Apple type IN#2 to accept input from the PC and PR#2 to
send input to the PC. After this at the PC type CATALOG and you should see the
directory in the term program.

Until I know the cable is good and the card switches are correct I would stick
with 2400 baud. After things finally get working then go to a faster
connection.

One more note, and I hope this isn't your problem. I had similiar difficulties
on my //c and it was a bad serial port. I had to change the motherboard. Your
ss card may be bad or your cable. Also, your cable may not be shielded
correctly and is receiving interference from something, maybe a monitor. When
transferring between term programs watch which protocols you use. It's slower
but you may be better off with Xmodem. Apple programs had some non-standard
protocol support whch caused many headaches in the past. This would not cause a
problem running ADT since it uses it's own routines. So check the SSC switches.
Check the cable for bad connections and/or cheap shielding. All ADT needs to
work (on my //c and PC) is three wires. RD,TD (crossed) and ground. Actually it
works without the ground but I don't like taking chances with Apple ports. They
are very fragile.
