Just make sure that you don't have the volume turned way up in the
Sound Control Panel.  The headphone jack outputs an amplified signal
suitable for driving headphones but VCRs and tape decks expect what is
called a line level signal.  This signal is 1 V peak to peak maximum.
If you go over + or - 1 V you end up overdriving the input on the VCR
and the sound gets clipped and starts getting distorted.

If you have a VCR or tape deck with a VU meter, you can adjust things
until the audio levels are optimal and thus avoid distortion as well
as having the audio level too low.

By the way, most PC sound cards have multiple outputs.  My
SoundBlaster 16 has both a line level output as well as a headphone
output.
