I have used a ROM card in an Apple IIe and could use the switch to
toggle between the motherboard ROMs and the card ROMs.

The Grappler+ I had was parallel only, and had a very small buffer. You
could buy a "Buffered Grappler+" which gave you up to 32k (64k?) of
buffer space. They were among the most popular printer cards for the
Apple II, and were made by the Orange Micro company.
