Here is a direct quote from the Shortcuts file on the System 6.01
SystemTools2 disk:

"Holding down 'Option' while double-clicking a document (or while
choosing 'Open' from the Finder's File menu) presents the directory
dialog box. You can specify what application to associate with the
desired document for a one time launch. Holding down 'Option' and
'Control' while double-clicking a document does the same thing, but
the Finder makes note to launch that application whenever you open a
document of that same kind."

This says that the Option-Control technique makes a permanent link
(not a temporary one as you said which is accomplished with the Option
technique) and it doesn't have any stipulation that it must be made to
an existing link. It simply states that the Finder makes note to
launch an application of that type from then on.

As I said in my reply to Louis, I think the problem here is that the
old style icons that GraphicWriter III is using is probably taking
precedence over the link that he created with the Option-Control
technique. However, I just tested this myself because my
GraphicWriter III old style icons were not pointing to the application
and it worked for me so I guess my hypothesis is wrong.

Back to the old drawing board. :-)
