The copy of Red Hat's Linux version 5.2 that I have came with a beta
protocal for Appletalk.  There may be a full blown release available now.
You will still only get 56K across a serial cable.  If you go all LocalTalk,
you can get a pretty significant increase over the serial connection.

My final solution for hooking my GS up to the PC was to dump the Linux idea
and find a LocalTalk - Ethernet bridge.  I have a PathFinder by Dayna.
These bridges are getting much harder to find now that the newer Macs all
support Ethernet.  The GS connects to the bridge via LocalTalk and the
bridge connects to my 10/100 Ethernet Hub.  I have one of my PC's running
Windows NT Server (Workstation won't act as an AppleServer) and have set one
partition up on one of my 4.5GB Baracuda's to be my shared drive.

It is cool but the documentation for setting up Server to do this is pretty
poor.  I mostly accomplished it through trial and error.  If you are
interested in pursuing this path, I will write you some detailed
instructions.
