Looking for II/IIgs music software/advice

I teach public school music, and I've recently inherited several Apple
IIc and IIgs computers. I'm looking for freeware, shareware, or cheap
software which will help my students learn music and will run on these
machines-something like Music construction set. (please respond via
e-mail, since I'm not usually on this group). Also, is it possible to
use a IIgs as a midi controller (like on a Mac), and if so, what
cables/software would I need to hook it to a keyboard
