I remember that the 5.25" drives came with a cardboard pseudo-disk inside
with a little tab hanging out which included the message, "REMOVE BEFORE
USE AND NEVER REINSERT."

Make of that what you will...
In the Disk ][, I think the pressure pad touches the head when the door is
closed with no disk inside; in the DuoDisk and the 5.25" Drive, I am not
so sure.
