Need help with AppleIIGS

Hello,
I have an AppleIIGS, I'm pretty sure it has Rom 3. I've had it for a
long time (it's not recently purchased), and it used to work fine. Now,
I can almost never turn it on. Usually, here's what happens: I flip the
switch. The green light flashes on for a second, then turns off. Then it
starts going on and off every 1 second. When I turn it off, the computer
makes probably a half second "blip" noise, and that's it. Sometimes the
light is strong, sometimes it's very dim. Sometimes, when the light is
very bright, the computer actually boots up, for about 3 seconds, and
the little beep even ... beeps, but after that the machine hums and
crackles off. I've gotten it on for a minute lately, but I can't get the
monitor on without the power draining out again. Every maybe 3-5 months
since I reconnected it (hasn't been used since last year since 94').
Obviously, it's a power problem. I'd assume it would be in the
rectangular silver box inside the computer, but my question is: Is there
anyway to fix my problem? I've heard (or read, I don't remember) that
the power supply (I think that's what the box is, right?) has a
performance expectancy of 2-6 years. Anyway, I opened the box up and
couldn't find anything disconnected (like if one of the wires fell out
of a socket). The board was slightly brown in some areas, so I'm
thinking it probably is partially burned out. I probably won't go to the
trouble of buying a new power-thingy (50 bucks I think), so if anyone
knows if it's possible to get the computer running (fixing the box,
smashing it with a hammer), I'd gratefully accept any help. Yes, I've
tried it on different outlets, and plus my monitor goes on fine so I
don't think it's an external problem. If anyone can help, please email
me at pstein@nettaxi.com

Thanks:)
