I think you can double the frequency, but you'd then end
up with two images, apparently half height, stacked one
on top of the other on the monitor.
What you would have to do is go into the monitor and
halve the monitor's sync. That way, you get one full
screen image.
If you go with modifying the signal, a scan doubler is needed
A scan doubler doubles more than the frequency.
It buffers each scan line and sends it out twice.
