Actually, it is the bandwidth of the COMPOSITE VIDEO
standard that's limited.
With monochrome monitors, you get a higher bandwidth
because the monitor does not have to decode any color
info from the composite video. With color monitors, the
color info limits the bandwidth for pixel info.
For example, take the Commodore monitor with the
composite and RGB inputs I was talking about. My old
Laser 128EX/2 produces very sharp RGB text, so the
picture tube and monitor hardware supports sufficient
bandwidth. Yet when I connect it via the composite
video input, 80 column text is unreadable.
Also remember the old Color Composite IIe/IIc
monitors from Apple. You had to kick a switch to
change them to monochrome mode in order to bypass
the color hardware because of bandwidth limitations.
