What I did was to download the Wiz 5 Dsk's from Asimov, unZip them,
start Wiz 5, and create some characters.

One thing's for sure, it takes a while to get used to the way this
game handles things. However, once you create a party-- e.g. A)dd your
characters at Gilgamesh's-- the #)Inspect and E)quip options work like
they are supposed to. And, in the maze in Camp, the group E)quip option
lets you select which items to equip for each character.

If your characters show up numbered 1-6 with names, "Class",
"Hits", etc. listed, then, you should be able to Inspect an individual
character and Equip his/her items. If this stuff does not work for you,
perhaps there is a problem with the emulator you are using.

Another possibility is a bad Dsk. The only two Dsk's used at the
beginning of a quest are Wiz5_a.dsk and Wiz5_b.dsk. Both of these should
show up with the usual Dsk file length of 143,360. (You can view exact
file length under Windows by right-clicking on the file and selecting
Properties.)

Probably, you downloaded the Wiz 5 A-I Dsk's in compressed .gz
zipped form. The correct lengths of the .gz files for the A and B dsk.gz
files as downloaded from Asimov are ...

wizardry_5_a.dsk.gz 75,742 bytes
wizardry_5_a.dsk.gz 85,679 bytes

If you contacted the site from which you downloaded the files via an
http:// reference, it is likely that you got a bad download. Most
archive sites should be contacted via an ftp:// reference.

Once you get going, here is some info which may help:

The Wiz 5 manual says you can use W-A-X-D or the Arrow keys to move.
Under AppleWin, all of the cursor keys work fine in Wiz 5 _except_ the
--> key.

When creating characters, do not settle for less than a total of 64
attribute points. (The max seems to be 70.) Definitely, do not just
settle for whatever you get. Attribute points take time to build during
play; they are too valuable to blow off at the start.

For some weird reason, the Create dice rolls usually try to stick you
with a total of 50-55. This just makes the player create and throw away
10 or so characters for every 'keeper'-- dumb, especially since you have
to enter a name before the roll. Fortunately, the Utlilties let you
change the BS names you end up using to ones you really want once you
have some good characters.
