I wouldn't gut it either. These aren't getting any more plentiful. I have four
in my attic, two of which work. I haven't given up on the other two yet. I
have a III and a III plus with Profile cards with which to use the working 
drives.

If you know of a source for $25 gigabyte SCSI drives like you said elsewhere
in this thread, I'm all over that. My IIgs has space to burn on its 230 mb
hard disk though.
