Modem cable troubles...

I bought one of those "Mac hardware handshaking cables" so I could use my US 
Robotics V.Everything with my Apple //gs, since the wiring diagrams for the Mac 
Mini-DIN and the GS one, I believe, are identical.

My problem is this:

When I boot up my Apple //gs and hit Ctrl-Reset to drop to Applesoft, I then 
type PR#2:IN#2 to get the modem to send and receive text, but as soon as I type 
any character, the SD and RD lights go crazy.

What's happening?
