I'd have to say that the best investment I ever made on IIGS equipment 
was to purchase a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIP Plus. 

As far as I know, the current equivalent to that printer is the HP LJ 6L, 
and I've seen that at Office Depot for $399, which is about half of what 
I paid for mine 6 years ago.

If money is an object, there are quite a few less expensive laser 
printers available that emulate the LaserJet. Some of those are 
available for as little as $299. While shopping around, the 
keyword to keep in mind is "PCL3." That's HP's printer control langauge 
that is supported by Harmonie, the set of GS/OS printer drivers that are 
published by Shareware Solutions II. PCL is backwards compatible, so PCL1 
and PCL2 are also supported by Harmonie on the IIGS.

BTW, in the current issue of the Shareware Solutions II newsletter, I 
published a kind of "Everything you need to consider when thinking 
about buying a new printer" type of article that, IMHO, went into a lot of 
depth and answered just about any question anyone might have when it came 
to buying a new high quality printer.
