I have used Zip disks formatted for both Mac and PCs with my IIGS with an
Apple High Speed SCSI card. The biggest difference I have found is that when
using PC formatted disks the GS will ask if you want to format the disk when
it is in a drive on boot up or if inserted while in the finder. With System
6.0.1
and the HFS FST and a Mac disk you get the message about initalizing on two 
partitions but will recognize the third. By launching Advanced Disk Utilities
first before inserting the Zip disk you can avoid the formatting questions and
just go right to the partitioning. At this point either format acts the same
and
you will not have to do a low level format. In my case that means about 45 
seconds to partition and format versus about 10 minutes for a low level format.
