I don't have the experience you requested to give you a definitive answer,
but ...

I _suspect_ it would have no effect on the cable, but rather, it would
change the serial firmware command character (CTRL-I vs CTRL-A) and perhaps
change whether the DCD line was monitored.

If it turns out that it does affect the cable, color me impressed. It seems
like those auto-switching port setups (swapping the transmit and receive
lines internally) came along later, as least as it concerned Ethernet
wiring, and I can't say they ever came along to the serial port world.

I realize that this would not technically be an auto-switch situation, since
you have to select Printer/Modem with the control panel, but I'd still be
surprised.

Just my 2 cents. I've got nothing to back it up, and I hope that someone who
does can enlighten us.
