My wife uses the '586/dx133 clone, 32megs ram, a 17" svga monitor
& a 28.8 modem and she likes the point 'n click aspect. I use it
when I need `visual'. But my dinky '386dx40, with 20meg ram, a 12"
vga monitor & a 14.4 modem beats her system hands-down; almost
_every_ time.
Why? Simple: my system is mainly used as a DOS-box, with a TXT-
based window onto the internet. 'Cept for when things get bogged
down all over; QModem Pro (for DOS), the FreeNet & Lynx on my
"old" system walks all over the "new" '586 clone running Win95 &
IE4. Even my IIe, with a Supra2400, ProTERM, FreeNet & Lynx; can
almost keep up with the graphical IE4. The IIgs, with a generic
14.4, can out-pace IE4. all for the same reasons. TXT is fast,
fast, fast. And did I mention that TXT-based browsing is FAST?
Yes, the `web' looks just *GREAT* graphically; but I'm online
looking for information, not pretty pictures & neat fonts. I
don't deny its attractiveness and I don't think others should
overlook the extra speed and wider range of platforms that a
TXT-based browser can exist on. Info is info & TXT gives it, NOW!
