The largest group of Apple IIgs's that were never upgraded were
those installed in schools. Even though some teachers were aware of
the upgrade program, many decided not to even bother since these
GS's were being used as accelerated Apple IIe's with color video.
In emulation mode, there is no advantage gained in upgrading the
ROM whatsoever (unless a 4 MB RAM Disk wasn't good enough). :)
I remember at my own high school, I bugged them for years to
upgrade their GS that had a faulty VGC and ROM 00. Eventually, in
my final year, I offered to take it in to the dealer myself to
have it upgraded (which is what happened). Too bad it was stolen
just a year or two later, I guess someone thought it was some
varient of the Macintosh II. :)
