But the thing to do was to refer them to the group you thought was
appropriate as some people always do when they spot a Mac question. Or
alternately just post a followup complaining about the off topic post
if you have the same knee jerk reaction which a lot of people reading
this group have and you are consistent in doing it. The point of my first
followup is that plenty of people happily answer or at least ignore any off
topic question except those about Macs and they complain about those.

They don't need set up as that's the job of the creator type associated
with each file. One need only use software such as Snitch or Get More
Info to change the creator and thereby change the app which will open
them by default.
