That is a good solution to the problem, but it is not what Gabriel was
describing. "Tunneling" has been available for a long time on the Mac
as well.

Spring-loaded folders was a new feature in MacOS 8. It lets you browse
down through a series of nested folders without taking your finger off
the mouse button.

It is most useful when you are dragging a file icon to copy or move it,
and are thinking "now where do I want this to go?" Just drag the icon
over a folder, hold it for a short time, and the folder opens up.
Repeat for subfolders. If you go too far, just move the mouse pointer
out of the window and the last folder closes again. When you release
the mouse button, the file is copied (or moved) into the target
location, and all intermediate windows are closed.

You can also do this without dragging a file icon by doing as Gabriel
described: click-and-a-half on a disk or folder icon (click, release,
press and hold).

It takes a little getting used to, but it is very nice.

I'd have to have a look through the TellFinder/FinderSays messages to
see whether it would be feasible to add this to the IIgs via a Finder
Extra, but I suspect you cannot get precise enough interaction (and may
not be able to take control on the initial action).
