  It is an exaggeration, in fact; my 'primitive' Appleworks machine does 
not use virtual memory and needs no such machinations.  Thus I can -- as 
the situation warrants -- pop the disk, or shut down, without permission 
from the computer with no harm done (provided a disk write is not 
occurring).

  If Apple is so certain of its let-the-computer-decide philosophy, Apple 
should disable automatic power-off head parking on the hard drive.  Let 
it crash: that'll teach those pesky users to use the Shut Down feature.  
(Hard lockups and power failures?  Those never happen.)
