Yes, that is true, the oldest Apple //e's had "APPLE ][" in their
startup screen. It was changed later, in the enhanced Apple //e (the
ones with the 65C02; those also had new ROMs).
[Tidbit: at one time, Apple tried to name the enhanced Apple //e "Apple
//e+", argumenting that the e already meant "enhanced". But the name
didn't stick]
I'm not entirely sure I remember correctly, but I seem to recall that
there also was a kit available to enhance the original Apple //e, making
them compatible with the new ones. Now what was the name of that kit,
I'm wondering...
