Pournell too all his computing advice from someone he called his "mad friend"
who was an old school big system guy who told him Macs were toys and put him on
the eternal upgrade path of the PC. His Byte column is a chronicle of
everything wrong with Wintell with every month another list of stuff you HAVE
TO HAVE in order to get things to work right and every he went through to get
work done. But as an old NASA hand, he finds this is a more familiar approach
to technology. In other words, it seems right to him that writting a book on a
computer is an engineering project.
He has been a very influential drunk in the business.
