Well, I do know that I have apparently knocked a phone off the hook
and come back into the room 15+ minutes later and I could immediately
hear that there was a phone off the hook.

It's a little hard to check out at the moment, but if the modems are
close enough, it's much easier to just run a phone line between the 
two and guarantee yourself a nice clean line.
