Both you and Greg say this and I am a little confused. Does this
constant beeping continue indefinitely? On my phone service, if you
leave the line off the hook, when the dialtone times out, we too get
a rapid beep-beep-beep-beep. However, after two minutes or so of
beeping, the line goes completely silent. That's when I can get
modem communication between two computers on my phone line.
I don't know how it works in New Zealand, but in the U.S.A., the
whole country used to behave this way. With the breakup of Bell
Systems, this may have changed for many parts of the country,
but it has remained the same for me....
