Direct Cable file transfer

I have a PC that runs windows 95.  It has a 28K modem

My GS has a 28K modem too.

The only way I know to transfer files is through a direct cable, using 
Crossworks.   (top speed setting is 19200, but I have a 50' serial cable, 
and Crossworks reports errors at top speed)

I can get 9600 baud transfer speed with this setup.  Real slow


Is there any way to use the modems to transfer files, without one modem 
having to call the other?

Does anyone have a suggestion for an easy to use communication program for 
PC that will run with Windows95?  I could use spectrum on the GS side 
then.
