Seeing that you have a TWGS installed, you should have the port
speed set to 56700 on both computers.

Try using a shorter serial cable.

You can have one modem call the other through your phone line.
Just leave the phone off the hook until there is no dial tone, then
use AT commands on both modems to make one connect to the
other. Leave data compression on and have the computers set
to 56700 and you will be able to get great Zmodem speeds...

Through your phone wiring will work. I did this several years ago,
but I forgot the exact AT commands. If your two computers are
in different rooms, using the modems to transfer through the phone
wiring is much easier than null modem. Besides, with Zmodem
and CRC-32, you are ensured that your files won't get corrupted.
A simple null modem serial transfer can get you damaged files after
waiting half an hour for a transfer...not fun.

I suggest HyperTerminal on Windows95 (should be included) and
Spectrum or ProTERM on the GS side...both computers set at 56700.
If nobody provides the AT commands, I'll look them up in the manuals
for you. Let me know...
