Accelerating the Disk II?
I am wondering if anybody has heard of an undocumented practice that
would "accelerate" the Disk II?
While trying to duplicate my original of Wings of Fury, I ran into some
problems with "bit-slipping" that kept my duplicate from getting past
the first track. If the boot routine failed, e.g. it wasn't an original,
it would fall into the Apple II monitor.
This is where my memory fails me, but I think I just tried booting from
slot 6 using 6^P and pressing RETURN. I may have been tinkering with
the sector routines of Wings of Fury, too, as I said, I don't recall all
the fine details, but I do know that when I inserted another disk it
would boot at about twice the speed.
DOS 3.3 disks would read the first few tracks but would crash before
showing the ] prompt. The only program that I saw approach working
correctly was Serpentine. It would load the boot screen about twice
as fast as normal but would hang right before it would normally
begin to play.
I haven't messed with this for some time, and I doubt I'd be able to
replicate my work, but I'm wondering if anyone else noticed or had
heard anything of the likes?
