Welcome back! In addition to Nathan Mates' excellent FAQ, there is
another good source of information put together by Rubywand:

The Csa2 (comp.sys.apple2) usenet newsgroup Frequently Asked Questions
files are compiled by the Ground Apple II site, 1997, 1998.

Not at all, you are welcome to ask questions.

>Where can I get a modem,

Any external modem would work. The GS works best with 14.4K,
but a higher speed one would work. I recommend the SupraExpress
external models from MacWarehouse, www.warehouse.com. Don't
tell them you have a GS, which would confuse them. The GS uses
the same cables as the Mac, so a SupraExpress modem would work
fine. The GS modem port speed can go up to 57600 baud, just like
older Macs.

>AppleWorks (did they make that for IIGS?)

Alltech Electronics, www.allelec.com, has AppleWorks GS. Joe
Kohn's Shareware Solutions II said it was selling for a few dollars
there. If you want to use it, you will need more memory (preferably
4MB or more) and preferably a hard disk. While you are at it, stop
by Shareware Solutions II, www.crl.com/~joko, to look at Pointless,
which you will need to use TrueType fonts. You can use all the TT
fonts from your PowerMac on your GS if you add Pointless.

Don't want graphical AppleWorks? You can get the same text ver.
you used on the IIc at Scantron Quality Computers. They are now
at version 5.1.

>and some terminal software for it?

ProTERM 3.1 from Intrec, www.intrec.com, is undoubtedly the best
terminal program. It supports Zmodem and VT100 and many others.
Spectrum also comes highly recommended.

>What else can the IIGS do?

Hold a tune and play Wolf 3D.

>And what's up with emulation on the Mac?

You can read GS disks on a Mac now and Mac disks on a GS.
