It could be the cable.  John Link's series did say that uP chips can
fail over time.  Now that you have HCGS working, download my TWGS
upgrade guide, TWGSupgrade.SHK or TWGSupgrade.BSQ from:

to find see how to replace the CPU and other parts.  It may solve
your problem.
