I used to have my apple II+ connected to my stereo, and I used both the

That's the only way to make it work. You have to play with the volume &
tone until you get it right. Once that's accomplished make a mark so you
know where to put them in the future. Yes it would have been nice, to
have some sort of cassette operating system. I remember using a program
that came close, but it wasn't like have DOS loaded. I always liked the
Adam's approach to cassettes.

No, but you do have to have the cable in the right jacks (in vs out).
