I'm not exactly sure what you are saying but it sounds to me like you
are trying to add spaces and/or tabs to the beginning of lines that
have already been word wrapped. Adding spaces or tabs here will not
do anything unless you resize the window or change your margins.
If you want to add extra spaces and/or tabs to the beginning of those
lines, you should go to the end of the line before the one you want to
add stuff to and press the RETURN key. This means that there is no
word wrap code keeping your space and tab characters from being
displayed. Then any spaces or tabs you add to the beginning of the
next line will display immediately.
It also sounds like you are trying to indent text. If you want the
same indent level for your entire document, you can use the choose the
Set Ruler menu item from the Layout menu and set the justification,
left margin, left indent, right margin and extra line spacing from
there. Or you can select the Show Ruler menu item from the Layout
menu to display the ruler which allows you to select your
justification and adjust your margins, indent and tabs.
An added benefit of using Show Ruler is that you also get pull down
menus for Font, Style, Size and Color instead of having to use the
Layout/Choose Font and Layout/Choose Color menu items.
If you want to do more than one level of indenting or to avoid
indenting every paragraph, you'll have to either use a real word
processor or break every line of your paragraphs and use tabs to
indent only the lines you want to.
Hope this helps.
