Apple II <-> Mac: I still need help!
Several people answered my last post about transfering files between an
Apple II and a Macintosh, and I am grateful for their help. I am
currently borrowing some equipment from a local elementary school, so I
feel that I have all the hardware necessary to make these file transfers
possible. However, I am still unable to do so, because of software
problems, or perhaps just inexperience. So, I need help! :)
There are two different plans of action that I am trying, and I will
explain each one separately, along with the problems I have run into.
First, I was given a copy of MacADT, a utility specifically for creating
disk image files out of Apple II disks, and vice versa, using a null
modem cable or similar direct connection between the two computers. My
Apple IIe currently has an Apple Super Serial card, with a cord running
between it and the printer port on the Mac. I know that this connection
is running perfectly, as I was able to transfer the ADT application to
the Apple IIe, using a Mac terminal program. However, MacADT all but
refuses to run, crashing every single time I try to start it on the
Mac. I tried running it on another Mac, and also tried running it
without any Mac system extentions loaded, with the same results.
Obviously this hasn't been a problem for everybody, otherwise I wouldn't
have been recommended the program. Does anybody know why MacADT won't
run on my system? Does it have anything to do with the fact that my
system is PPC-based, instead of 68K-based? I have MacADT version
1.2.0d1, so if anybody has acccess to a different version that may be
more stable, please let me know.
Second, the Apple IIe also currently has a 3.5" drive connected, so that
it is possible to copy files back and forth using ProDOS formatted
disks. This should be ideal for both individual Apple files and
complete disk images, as I have found another Apple II application
(DSK2FILE) that will create images from disks and vice versa. The
problem I am running into is that I obviously need the Apple II
compression program "ShrinkIt" to use this and other Apple II
applications, and I am not sure how to get a usable copy of it on the
Apple II using only the equipment I have. This is complicated by the
fact that I have had very little experience working with ProDOS, other
than sticking in a disk and watching it boot. So, if anybody can show
me where to find a copy of ShrinkIt for the IIe (I'm afraid I don't have
access to a IIGS), and how to get from the Macintosh to the IIe using
only a ProDOS 3.5" disk, I'd appreciate it. I would also very much
appreciate somebody showing me where I can find some general information
and helpful hints about using ProDOS.
Regarding the second set up, I do have a file currently on the Mac
called "shrinkit34.sdk". I've tried copying this file to a ProDOS disk,
but since I do not know my way around ProDOS, and the Apple IIe was
unwilling to load the disk it was on (the ol' "UNABLE TO LOAD PRODOS"
error message), I haven't been able to do anything with it. Again, all
help will be appreciated.
The sooner I can get these problems solved, the better. A lot of the
equipment I'm using must be returned when the weekend is over.
