There are at least THREE things I can NOT do:
1) Boot from the drive. (I quit from the Finder, power down, power off
the boot drive, and power up the IIGS. All I get is the sliding apple,
not a SCSI boot error, or other bizarre behaviour.) [Boot blocks are
NOT the problem. ADU formatting should have placed them there, and I
re-installed them using Davex and init .62 -w and init .41 -w . I forgot
to mention that the SCSI controller is in slot 6, the boot drive is
s6,d1, the first partition of UGLY is s6,d2 and the second is s4,d1 ]
2) Launch a p8 SYS file on the drive, from the Finder, or a p8 application
like Davex. From the finder, prodos 2.0.3 launches, the sys applic
name show at top of screen and then I get a please insert disk message
followed by a can't launch next application error = $0045, and then I
return to finder. From p8 (davex or basic.system), the chosen p8
sys file on UGLY tries to start, can't and I get the equivalent of a
device not connected message. S16 applics are no problem. They launch,
run, and exit just fine on UGLY drive from HELL's partitions. p8 SYS
applics will NOT launch. But any p8 applic launched from boot drive,
Appleshare, or floppy can use the drive fine, no problems. They just
can't be started from the UGLY drive. One exception (so far) is CSU.
Yes I can run CSU (chinook scsi utils) from the UGLY drive. Only
SCSI ID 6 drive is shown. And I can quit CSU back to the Finder.
But ... after CSU is exited, UGLY is forever lost to P8 (device
not connected), but not to GS/OS and the Finder, until I reboot.
In short, whenever a p8 SYS applic tries to launch from the UGLY drive
the drive goes OFFLINE as far p8 is concerned until I reboot. Up until
that point the drive is a valid p8 drive.
3) As said before, CSU will NOT ever recognize this drive as being connected.
Otherwise, UGLY drive from HELL is a very quiet, stable 40 Meg SCSI harddrive.
It just won't boot, run SYS applics, or been seen by CSU.
Bizarre! (I have tried scsi ID 5 and 0 as well). Any clues to how/what/why?
Should UGLY go in the good or bad pile? :-) Should I just use UGLY as an
HFS drive and forget about p8? Will the Voodo be different after Mardis Gras?
Will Hillary stay with Bill? Oops, wrong newsgroup ;-)
