This would mean that he would need to somehow combine the horizontal
and vertical sync signals from the Atari and put that composite sync
into the IIgs monitor.

You might want to check the output of the Atari ST to see if the
horizontal sync can also act like a composite.  I know that most, if
not all, monitors with separate horizontal and vertical syncs can
accept a composite sync on the horizontal sync line.  Maybe the
Atari's output will act the same.

Let me know what you find out as I have an Atari 1040 STE that I
picked up at the Goodwill a while back and haven't had much of a
chance to play with it.  I'd like to know what monitors I can hook up
to it.  :-)
