Sounds a lot like the power supply is getting noisy depending on
the load of all components in the system. You can verify that by
unplugging the speaker from the motherboard and any external speakers
and seeing if this still happens. A lot of older ROM 00/01 boxes have
that quirk of a noisy power supply, but still work just fine.
