Actually, as far as I know, the VGC was socketed on all factory
runs of the original Apple IIgs motherboard (ROM 00 and 01 firmware).
I can almost say this with certainy considering high number of boards
I've come across in my own experience (they've all had a PLCC socket)
and reactions when the ROM 3 board was introduced -- it was then that
people complained about the Ensoniq the VGC being soldered in. :)
